The City of Spokane’s Community, Housing and Human Services Department (CHHS) is asking social service agencies to apply to be “warming centers” for the homeless during periods of extreme cold weather for the 2014-15 winter.

The City is initiating a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), asking social service agencies to fill out applications to be designated as “warming centers” for homeless people.

The sites, which are not set up to provide typical shelter accommodations such as a bed, would be opened at the request of the City as needed between Nov.1 and Feb. 28. These sites would be available in addition to regular homeless shelters located throughout the City, allowing more people to get out of the cold.

Warming centers are activated by CHHS when temperatures are extreme and put individuals at risk. The money to reimburse the agencies for their costs when the centers are opened comes from the City.

Applications to become a designated warming center are available on the CHHS website, spokanechhs.org, and are due to CHHS on the first floor of City Hall by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014.
