The City of Spokane and Downtown Spokane Partnership are signing up volunteers for the annual Cleaning From The Core (CFTC) event set for Saturday, April 25. The event kicks off 2015’s Spokane Gives Week, a community-wide initiative designed to encourage year-round volunteerism.
Every year, hundreds of volunteers spread out across Downtown Spokane to clean streets, sweep sidewalks and remove trash, take part in plantings, clean up graffiti and more. In 2014, over 400 CFTC volunteers helped remove 4,620 pounds of trash from the Downtown core. This year, the City is planning an even bigger cleanup effort with more varied projects including the planting of 2,000 new tree seedlings along the Spokane River.
The City’s Office of Neighborhood Services (ONS) hosts Cleaning From The Core as part of a broader effort to clean and beautify Downtown for residents and visitors in advance of Bloomsday, Hoopfest and other spring and summer events. The City teams up with the Downtown Spokane Partnership and a number of community sponsors to get the event organized.
As a thank you to volunteers, CFTC is hosting an After Party at The Tribal Gathering Place next to City Hall (808 W. Spokane Falls Boulevard) with food from local food truck vendors, music, and raffle items donated from local businesses.
Cleaning From The Core projects are scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. April 25, with work wrapping up before the After Party at noon.
