Places for unsheltered to seek relief from heat

The City’s Community Housing and Human Services department in conjunction with its community partners has compiled a list of places where people who are unsheltered or otherwise need to cool off may seek temporary relief from the extremely high temperatures expected over the next week. Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees by Saturday.

The list includes The Salvation Army, The Women’s Hearth, and the City’s six public library branches. The Salvation Army will open its Fellowship Hall. The cooling centers hours begin Friday, June 26.

Hours and days vary at each location:

The Salvation Army, 111 E. Indiana – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (except Saturday)

Crosswalk, 525 W. 2nd Avenue – Open 24 hours

Downtown Public Library, 906 W. Main Avenue – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fri-Sat and Mon, closed Sunday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Tues and Wed, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Thurs and Friday, July 3

East Side Library, 524 S. Stone – 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Fri, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sat, closed Sun-Mon, 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tues, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Wed-Friday, July 3

Hillyard Library, 4005 N. Cook – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day except Sun-Mon (closed) and Tues (12 p.m. – 8 p.m.)

Indian Trail Library, 4909 W. Barnes – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day except Sun-Mon (closed) and Tues (12 p.m. – 8 p.m.)

Shadle Park Library, W. 2111 Wellesley Ave – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day except Sun (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.) and Mon-Tues (10 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

South Hill Library, 3324 S. Perry – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day except Sun (closed) and Mon-Tues (10 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

The Women’s Hearth (single women only), 920 W. 2nd Avenue – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Fri, closed Sat-Sun, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mon-Tues, 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wed, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thurs, closed Fri, July 3

In addition to these cooling centers, all regular shelters remain open.
