Councilmember Mike Allen will testify in front of the Washington State Building Code Council on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Spokane Fire Department Training Center for an amendment to our current state code.

“The requested code change came about during our stakeholder process for short term rentals,” Councilmember Allen said. “Under the current code, no short term rental in the State of Washington that rents one or two bedrooms can operate legally without installing a sprinkler system. Cities are not legally allowed to amend this provision; only at the state level can this be amended.”

The code Allen is requesting to change specifically is the International Residential Code, Section R101.2. The City of Spokane is one of the few cities in Washington that have passed legislation allowing short term rentals to operate.

All interested citizens are encouraged to testify or to submit written comments to the Washington State Building Code Council. For more information on how to submit comments or about the public meeting, please contact Councilmember Allen’s office at 509.625.6261 or his assistant Rae-Lynn Barden at 509.625.6715.
