U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced Spokane as one of four winners for the DOT’s Every Place Counts Design Challenge.
Each winning city receives design sessions with on-site technical assistance and design experts in the field from the U.S. DOT. The Every Place Counts Design Challenge helps identify community design solutions and bridges infrastructure divide, connecting people to essential services.
“This is a great opportunity to connect complementary investments in surrounding neighborhoods,” said Spokane Mayor David Condon. “Exciting changes are happening in East Central Spokane that enhances transportation, jobs and neighborhood culture. The technical assistance provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation will further elevate and transform that area.”
The construction of I-90 cut right through the heart of Spokane dividing the East Central Neighborhood. As a recipient of the Every Place Counts Design Challenge, the City stands to benefit from technical assistance that will serve to bring together the affected East Central Area with partners that are committed to developing solutions for re-connectivity opportunities.
Spokane’s design session is Thursday, July 7 to Friday, July 8 at the Riverpoint campus. The design session will focus on connecting those affected by the existing I-90 corridor with partners dedicated to creating solutions. In addition, the session will address maximizing connectivity with projects that are already underway.
Volunteers in the following fields are encouraged to join the design session including architectural design firms, urban and regional planners, engineers, and academia. The public is invited to join the session on July 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. which will include time for public feedback and a Questions and Answer format. On July 8 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a final presentation that the public is also invited to attend.
