Mayor proclaims April "Gonzaga University Month"

Following an historic season that culminated in a run to the championship game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, capturing the hearts and excitement of an entire city along the way, Spokane Mayor David Condon has proclaimed April to be “Gonzaga University Month.”

“Gonzaga has taken the city on a magical run to the peak of college basketball the past few months and done it in a way that represents the university and city in the best of lights,” Condon said. “Spokane is fortunate to count higher education and its unwavering support for its basketball teams among our many strengths, and Gonzaga basketball has helped us share that story with the rest of the country. Congratulations on a great season and outstanding tournament. Spokane is proud to be the home of the Zags.”

The proclamation reads as follows:

WHEREAS, the Gonzaga University 2016-17 Men’s Basketball Team, coached by Mark Few, has had the most wins in program history, amassing an overall season record of 37 wins and 2 losses; and

WHEREAS, Gonzaga won the West Coast Conference Championship and the West Regional Championship for the first time in school history, earned a berth to the NCAA Final Four, and competed in the championship game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the team demonstrated the ability of student athletes from many cultures, nations and backgrounds to work together and achieve at the highest level, and delighted, inspired and represented our community through athleticism, spirited competition and sportsmanship;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, David Condon, Mayor of the City of Spokane do hereby recognize and proclaim the month of April 2017 as

GONZAGA UNIVERSITY MONTH

in the City of Spokane, and urge all citizens to celebrate the record breaking 2016-17 season of the Gonzaga University Men’s Basketball Team.
