Fatal Shooting on West Side of Lower South Hill

Two people were shot in an apartment complex near 2000 W. 10th Avenue. One person was deceased at the scene and another was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The shooting suspect has not been located.

On December 19th, 2017 just after 3:00 p.m., a report of a shooting with two victims was received by the Spokane Police Department. SPD officers confirmed a female was deceased on a stairwell at the apartment complex. A male, shot in the head, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The suspect is described as an African American female between the ages of 25 and 35 years. It is not known if the suspect knew the victims or had any connection to the location.

Multiple K9 units along with SPD patrol, SPD SWAT and the helicopter from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office worked on a track but the suspect was not located.

Major Crimes detectives have taken over the investigation and will be processing the scene.

The identity of the deceased victim and the cause of death will be released by the Spokane Medical Examiner’s Office.

Update to Investigation(December 23, 2017)

On December 22nd, 2017, twenty-three years old Anne M. Carpenter was taken into custody for the homicide from December 19th near 2000 W. 10th Avenue. The tireless work by detectives, SPD’s Special Investigative Unit (SIU), Special Victims Unit (SVU), SWAT and the Patrol Anti-Crime Team (PACT) located Carpenter.

The enormous support from the community provided tips from the artist sketch. These tips helped patrol officers do an excellent job of gathering info from those leads. The outstanding, around the clock work by Major Crimes detectives developed probable cause to make the arrest. The entire SPD department was committed to finding the person responsible for the horrible crime and continue our commitment to providing a safer city.

Carpenter was booked into Spokane County Jail for one count of Murder 1st degree and one count of Assault 1st degree.
