Mayor Nadine Woodward issued the following statement about the drug possession and use ordinance passed tonight by the City Council:

“Criminalizing the possession and use of drugs sets the critical expectation that we have prioritized the health and safety of our community. This action establishes tough boundaries for drugs and leaves every opportunity for treatment. This balance is the result of the Mayor’s Office and City Council working to do what is best for everyone who lives, works, recreates, visits, attends school, or otherwise enjoys the community. Spokane is once again leading the way on what working together should look like. Our hope is the state sees the wisdom in this balance as it finishes its work.”
