As increased temperatures approach during the summer months, City of Spokane residents are reminded to have garbage, recycling, and yard waste cart ready at the curb by 7 a.m. on their designated collection day. Routes may begin earlier than normal when temperatures are forecasted to impact employee health.

“Our first priority is the health and safety of our crew members,” says Chris Averyt, Director of Solid Waste Management. “Putting out carts the night before or first thing in the morning will ensure that we will pick up your household solid waste reliably when weather adjustments are made.”

Recently approved legislation provides guidance for outdoor employees working in high temperatures and forecasts may require that adjustments be made to routes without notice. City code SMC 13.02.0310, specifies the deadline for residential curbside cart placement is 7 a.m.

The City’s Solid Waste Collections Department employs approximately 120 people and provides curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections service to City residents as well as a variety of commercial services for businesses. Residential collection information can be found on the City’s website.
