Residential Services

The City of Spokane's Solid Waste Collection offers a full suite of curbside collection services for residential customers—garbage, food and yard waste, and recycling. To help keep Spokane clean and safe, weekly garbage collection within the city limits is required for all occupied residences. Curbside recycling pickup for residential customers is on an every other week schedule and residents can find out which week they are scheduled with the recycle map tool.

Each home is furnished with special automated carts that are durable and easy to roll out for collection. Our services use advanced automated trucks equipped with a lifting mechanism on the side that picks up and empties your containers. This operation allows us to collect refuse and recycling more efficiently, which stabilizes the cost, improves service and reduces work-related injuries. The City is converting its fleet of trucks to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) from diesel. These trucks are less expensive to operate, quieter in our neighborhood, and less polluting.

Residential collection of garbage, yard waste and recyclables occurs on the same day. Please make sure to have your carts out by 6 a.m. for collection. Your driver may arrive earlier or later than what you are used to on any given week.

Here are a few tips to make weekly collection go smoothly:

  • Place your carts at the curb by 6 a.m. to ensure it's there when the truck arrives.
  • Keep your green cart at least 3 feet away from your garbage and recycling carts, any vehicles, or other obstacles. Don't place it under an eave or a basketball hoop and put it within two feet of the curb.
  • Make sure the lid opens toward the street or alley.
  • Don't overload the cart. There's a 200-pound weight limit.
  • Don't let material extend outside of the cart. Extra material that doesn't fit and is no longer than 4 feet can be bundled and placed next to the cart. We'll pick it up for an extra fee.

Missed? The City of Spokane Solid Waste Collection is dedicated to providing efficient and friendly service. If for some reason we have missed your collection or have only partly emptied your cart, please call us immediately at 311, or for outside city limits, 509.755.CITY (2489) and we will make every effort to return within the same day or the next to remedy this situation (Friday collection will be picked up on Monday; we are closed weekends).

Assistance for Elderly or Disabled Customers: If you are unable to put your cart at the collection site due to a medical condition or disability, we offer a free “pack out” service. This service requires a physician to fill out a medical packout assistance request form. If you would like one emailed, faxed or mailed to your home or physician, please call 311, or for outside city limits, 509.755.CITY (2489).

Vacation Hold: Please notify us in advance if you need to place your collection services on hold while you are away. You can suspend your garbage a maximum of two times annually for two weeks or longer. We are unable to suspend your refuse for a one-week vacation. You will not be billed while your service is suspended.

Pick Up Days: View our map to figure out your weekly collection day.
