At 1:54 p.m. today, Spokane Fire received a dispatch to 6812 North Atlantic Ave regarding a reported house fire. Responders were informed that the occupant returned home to find black smoke upon opening the door. Just over two minutes after the dispatch Engine 99 from Spokane County Fire District 9 reached the scene, confirming smoke issuing from a one-story, multi-unit apartment, specifically the south end unit.

Upon arrival, Spokane Engine 18 deployed a hoseline inside, discovering a kitchen fire that was promptly extinguished. Additional firefighters secured a water supply from a local hydrant, deployed a backup hoseline, and meticulously searched the fire unit and adjacent units for potential victims. While no human casualties were found, firefighters rescued six cats from the affected unit; unfortunately, only two survived.

The fire is presently under investigation, with no available loss or damage estimates. However, due to the rapid response, substantial property value was preserved. Thankfully, there were no injuries to the public or firefighters. The Red Cross was contacted to assist in finding temporary housing for one adult and two cats. Spokane Fire would like to thank Spokane County Fire District 9, SCRAPS, Red Cross, and Avista Utilities for their response and assistance to this incident.

Spokane Fire commends the prompt response and efficient extinguishment that prevented the fire from escalating. It's crucial to note that fire can double in size in a standard residential home every minute. Fires such as this one are good examples of the importance of having an adequately staffed, equipped, and trained fire department ready to respond to your emergencies!
