Mayor David Condon discussed plans Monday to implement police service areas in 2014 and establish a grant management team to seek and manage outside funding. Both proposals are part of a citywide philosophy to implement integrated solutions that achieve multiple benefits.

Police Chief Frank Straub joined the Mayor to outline three initiatives that will better engage officers with the neighborhoods and community we serve:

  • Growing the successful downtown geographic policing approach to other areas of the city as a next phase. Police service areas will be added in the north and south. A dedicated team of officers and a detective, led by a captain, will be assigned to each area.
  • Establishing a Community Policing Unit to enhance the focus on crime prevention, family and social services and community problem solving.
  • Reengineering Internal Affairs and Training under one division managed by civilian and police leadership.

Jonathan Mallahan, neighborhood services director, also talked about a proposal to improve the city’s competitiveness for grants and other outside funding sources. A dedicated team would seek and manage grants under the plan.
