Spokane Mayor David Condon announced the beginning of a neighborhood planning process and declared June to be Open for Business Month during his regular Monday media briefing.

Known as Shaping Spokane, the neighborhood planning process will deliver a 20-year vision and roadmap for Spokane's future. The goal is to help neighborhoods identify and prioritize future needs and improvements.

The work will begin with three neighborhood visioning meetings next week:

  • Grandview/ Thorpe on Tuesday, June 10, 6:30 pm, at Finch Arboretum
  • Peaceful Valley on Wednesday, June 11, 7 pm, at Peaceful Valley Community Center
  • North Hill on Thursday, June 12, 6:30 pm, at Willard Elementary

Open for Business Month recognizes the importance of small businesses as economic drivers in Spokane.

Small business provides 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all new jobs over the past four decades, according to the federal Small Business Administration. The 23 million small businesses in the U.S. account for 54 percent of all U.S. sales.
