Hillyard Working on Community Involvement

The Hillyard neighborhood in northeast Spokane has a lot going on. It is working on a redevelopment plan to cultivate new economic opportunities. It is also adding workforce resources and inviting the community to a summer event series.

NewTech Skills Center in Hillyard offers tuition-free technical and professional training to public, private, and homeschooled students between the ages of 16 and 20 who are still pursuing a high school diploma. The teaching approach is similar to a trade school – job shadowing with college credit attached. NewTech offers many different programs from biomedical to cosmetology, culinary arts to welding, and so much more.

The Greater Hillyard Business Association has also released its Market Street Historic Hillyard 2014 Event Schedule which includes a variety of fun events throughout the year for all ages. Events include:

  • June 28 – Hillyard Appreciation Day and Hot Rod Show-n-Shine
  • August 1,2,3 – Hillyard Festival @ Harmon Park
  • August 2 – Hi-Jinx Parade; Hot Rods in Hillyard; Big Sky Auto Show (Market St.)
  • September 6 – Hillyard's Hippie Happening
  • October 11 – October Fest
  • October 31 – Trek & Treat
  • Late Fall (TBD) – Girls Day Out
  • December 6 & 7 – Hillyard's North Pole
