New standards for elevators are in effect in Spokane, with safety in mind. The changes have taken effect in Spokane in recent weeks.
Back in July, the City Council voted to update local ordinances to include the state-mandated changes. Chapter 70.87 RCW and the most current Washington State adopted version of Chapter 296-96 WAC and their amendments, as applicable, are now the elevator code of the City of Spokane.
The update to the state's code adds a focus on maintenance. A provision of the new WAC includes revisions to the Maintenance Control Programs. MCP's are detailed checklists that dictate the schedule of maintenance and inspection items for elevators and other conveyances.
The outcome is a standardized format for MCP's that will detail the checklist items that an elevator maintenance company is responsible for.
