The safety of our community and providing consistent, reliable emergency service at an affordable price is critically important. That's why today, the City is reissuing a call for bidders to provide ambulance services in Spokane.

This service is incredibly important. Total emergency medical calls represent more than 80 percent of the Spokane Fire Department's calls for service, while in recent decades, the number of fire responses and working fires has consistently decreased. Citizen needs are changing and we have to evolve our services to meet them.

As part of that evolution, last year I assembled representatives from throughout the emergency medical system, social service providers, the community at large, the City Council and City Administration to conduct a review and evaluation of Fire and Emergency Medical Services within the City of Spokane. That Fire Service Task Force review included how we provide ambulance services to the community. The Task Force made 30 recommendations, including that we continue to contract for ambulance services, a system that has provided safe, reliable service to Spokane citizens for 11 years.

To ensure that reliable service continues for our community and its changing needs, we believe the renewed call for bids is the best path forward to providing Spokane with the service it deserves.
