Project in Northwest neighborhood is part of Spokane River cleanup

As part of the City's on-going efforts to clean up the Spokane River, work on a new CSO (Combined Sewer Overflows) tank is set to begin during the 2015 construction season.

Crews will build a buried, concrete tank beneath Northwest Boulevard at about Providence Avenue. The tank, CSO 6, will be about 250 feet long and 50 feet wide. The CSO tank's main purpose is to temporarily store combined storm and sanitary sewage in order to prevent that sewage from spilling into the river during large storms or periods of rapid snowmelt.

The tank isn't the only thing happening with the project. Construction also includes new sewer main construction from Northwest Boulevard/Providence Avenue to H Street and south to Downriver Drive near N. Columbia Circle. Some areas will get new sidewalk and workers will also restore and landscape the area (a popular bench and totem pole will be returned after construction is finished). Finally, new street pavement will be put in where the tank and sewer main are constructed. Northwest Boulevard will be closed to all traffic during construction, but local access will be provided on the side streets.

This project is part of the City's Integrated Clean Water Plan, which is designed to improve the quality of the water in the Spokane River, one of the City's greatest assets. Taking a cleaner-river-faster approach, the Integrated Clean Water Plan is on track to improve Spokane's water and environment by prioritizing projects that have a greater impact on reducing pollution in the river.
