Winter can beat up Monroe and Lincoln Street hills pretty badly each winter, so drivers will be relieved to know crews are improving those stretches of roadway this construction season.
Work on the Monroe/Lincoln Street Couplet this year is concentrated between 4th and 8th Avenues. Improvements to the couplet continue from the last construction season. Construction is mostly done from 2nd to 4th Avenues, although crews will finish some minor work along that section this year, too.
Work includes full depth replacement of the roadway, curb and sidewalk improvements, and pedestrian lighting. Stormwater and water facilities will also be part of construction.
While those improvements are being made, drivers will see a significant traffic change in the area to accommodate the work. As construction gets underway on Monroe, Lincoln Street will be switched from one-way to two-way traffic from 4th to 7th Avenues. Monroe will be closed in that area, so traffic will be moved over to Lincoln temporarily. Once work on Monroe is finished, it will open back up and Lincoln will close.
All of this year's work on the couplet is expected to wrap up by mid-July.
If you live or work in the area, be prepared for increased noise during construction. A noise ordinance is in effect from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. south of 7th Avenue, but during working hours, noise is expected to increase significantly.
