With the official start to winter is only a week away, it’s time to wrap up construction season! As the cold weather creeps in, the City of Spokane was excited to open some great new projects this week in the University District – the Martin Luther King Jr. Way extension project and the University District Gateway Bridge.
The extension of MLK Way from Sherman to the new roundabout at Trent and Perry opened on Thursday. MLK Way now spans from Division Street to Trent Avenue! The street provides vehicular and truck traffic an efficient transportation route that eliminates several safety issues and increases capacity into and out of the downtown area. The street is not completely finished, but is available for driving this winter. In the spring, crews will complete a top lift of asphalt and additional work; this work is expected to take about six to eight weeks.
Spanning above MLK Way, we also opened the new University District Gateway Bridge. The cable bridge will now connect students, research, and development to commerce and residential neighborhoods in the Sprague area. The pedestrian and bicycle bridge safely ushers people over the BNSF Railway corridor as well as MLK Way. We are pleased to open this ionic 120- foot central arch bridge, and hope you will join us for a celebration in the New Year!
