SPOKANE - The Joint Arts commission has recommended the Bearing sculpture for placement on City of Spokane Parks land along the Centennial Trail near the corner of Summit Boulevard and Bridge Street. The recommendation will be reviewed at the next Park Board meeting, and public comment is welcome.

Local artist Ildikó Kalapács created the bronze life-size “Bearing” sculpture, celebrating the strength of the human spirit as it carries the burdens of the physical and emotional aftermath of war. A small version of the piece can be seen at the artist’s website.

The sculpture is offered as a no-cost gift to the city; no tax dollars would be used to purchase or maintain the piece. A proposed resolution also requires $10,000 be provided by the Bearing Public Sculpture Project Board for future maintenance costs of the artwork.

The next Park Board meeting is Thursday, April 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.
