Spokane, Wash. – A newly renovated sport court is coming to Underhill Park in East Central this fall.
The site will receive two renovated basketball courts, two dedicated pickleball courts, new sidewalks, lighting, and fence upgrades. The project replaces aging basketball and tennis courts.
Construction begins Monday, August 19, 2024 and will temporarily close the courts. The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the year (weather permitting) for the courts, and new landscaping will be completed in the spring. During construction, the closest park courts are located at Grant Park.
“Many of our sport courts are aging, and through our Master Plan process, we heard from the community how important these facilities are for health and wellness, and for building neighborhood connectivity,” said Garrett Jones, interim city administrator. “Investing in our neighborhood parks – amenities like playgrounds, restrooms, and sport courts – is our big focus right now, and we’re see that through recent projects like Liberty Park, Wildhorse Park, and Corbin Park. These renovations are often the result of matching grants and community supporters, and we are grateful for their collaboration to deliver on these community priorities.”
The budget for Underhill Park’s sport court renovation is $628,000. The project is funded by City of Spokane Parks & Recreation, and a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. The project is also made possible through generous support by Dick’s Sporting Goods, No-Li Brewhouse, and the Spokane Hoopfest Association. Cameron Reilly, LLC is the contractor.
This summer, Corbin Park received a renovated sport court, including the City’s first dedicated pickleball courts, bringing the total to 35 courts across six parks. Parks & Recreation aims to renovate one sport court per year.
