Spokane Police safely end standoff with Domestic Violence (DV) Assault suspect armed with a firearm; A female and two small children were safely removed from the home and the suspect was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of 2nd Degree Assault DV.
Last night, 7/27/14, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Spokane Police received a report of Domestic Violence with a weapon at a home in the 2400 block of W. 14th Avenue. A man, later identified as 27-year-old Jesse L. Hayden, was observed by witnesses assaulting a female, exiting a home with a handgun and pointing the gun at other outside the residence. Hayden then was observed going back in the home, with a woman and two small children, while he was still armed with the handgun.
Officers quickly responded to the scene and set up a perimeter to protect the safety of others in the area. SPD SWAT and Hostage Negotiators were called to the scene and began attempts to contact and negotiate with Hayden.
Officers made phone contact with Hayden and instructed him to come out of the home. Initially he agreed, however he did not come out and ceased phone contact with officers. Officers attempted contact with the female inside the residence, but there was no answer on her phone. Officers made announcements over the PA system, and continued negotiations with Hayden, telling him to come out of the home and surrender peacefully, however there was still no response.
Negotiations continued for several hours and today, 7/28/14, at approximately 5:15 a.m., the female who was inside came out safely and advised officers there were still two young children inside the home with Hayden.
Officers continued negotiations with Hayden and at approximately 5:45 a.m., Hayden came out on the front porch, holding a small child. Negotiations continued and officers were able to safely take the child from Hayden. Hayden was taken into custody and arrested without incident.
Hayden was booked into the Spokane County Jail on two charges of 2nd Degree Assault DV. He will appear in court today at 1:30 p.m.
A search warrant was written executed on the residence and firearm, similar to the one described by witnesses, was recovered and booked into the Property Evidence Facility.
This incident demonstrates SPD’s training and ability to safely de-escalate potentially very dangerous situations in a peaceful manner, without harm to victimes, other members of our community, suspects, or officers.
