Officers from Spokane Police Department's Patrol Anti-Crime Team (PACT) arrested 38-year-old Wenona M. Gent two days ago for 1st Degree Identity Theft, 1st Degree Robbery, and Possession of a Controlled Substance: Methamphetamine. These charges stem from a purse theft on Dec. 28th and an attempted forgery a few days later.
On Dec. 28th, 2014 just before 12:30 pm, a victim called Crime Check to report her purse was stolen from her shopping cart while at the Yoke's in the 200 block of E. North Foothills. A witness to the theft was able to chase the suspect down and get the purse back, but the victim's wallet had already been removed by the suspect. When the witness who retrieved the purse returned home, she noticed her shoulder was sore and upon further inspection, discovered the suspect had stabbed her during her attempted to get the purse back for the victim. She was treated and released at a local hospital.
Patrol Anti-Crime Team (PACT) Officer Dan Cole followed up with both victims and was also able to view video surveillance footage from the incident to get a suspect description as well as a description of the suspect vehicle. Ofc. Cole was contacted again when a suspect tried to cash one of the victim's checks at the Coeur d'Alene Casino. Through his follow up investigation, with help from security at the casino, Ofc. Cole was able to identify the suspect as Wenona Gent.
Gent was taken into custody January 6th without incident.
