Spokane Police took a man into custody after a standoff that lasted several hours today. The call started as an unknown trouble call where a male was reportedly yelling and breaking windows with a hammer at a home in Indian Trail. After receiving the first calls, SPD received an additional call that he had broken into a home and barricaded himself in a bedroom. After several hours in the home refusing to come out, Arley D. Hunt (34) surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. He will be booked into Spokane County Jail for Residential Burglary, 2nd Degree Malicious Mischief and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine.
Just before noon today, April 9, 2016, the Spokane Police Department responded to the report of an unknown trouble in the 10500 block of north Arrowhead in Indian Trail. Several callers reported that a male was at the home yelling, breaking windows with a hammed, and ripping screens out of the windows. The male, later identified as Hunt, fled that house on foot after jumping out of a window (attached are pictures of the window). He then broke into a home in the 5100 block of west Russett and barricaded himself in a bedroom. The homeowner advised there were possibly firearms in the home Hunt could gain access to. The occupants of the home were able to get out safely, leaving Hunt as the only person left in the house.
Resources from the Hostage Negotiation Team, SWAT, and the Explosives Disposal Unit were called in an effort to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution. After nearly three hours of attempting to contact Hunt, he surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. However, after being taken into custody, Hunt became uncooperative. As a precaution, due to his agitated state, he was taken to an area hospital for medical clearance prior to being booked into jail.
The Spokane Police Department would like to take a moment to thank the neighborhood affected by this incident. The successful outcome of this incident was due in large part to their cooperation and assistance; including one home owner who opened up his garage for SPD to use as a command post to run operations out of.
