June 14, 2017, just after 12:00 PM, Spokane Police responded to the report of a male calling from an apartment, at the Deer Run Apartments, located in the 9700 block of N. Morton St, where he claimed he had a hostage and weapons. Upon the arrival of Spokane Police, they determined the suspect who called was barricaded in his apartment, had a child with him, and was possibly suicidal. The Spokane Police SWAT Team, Hostage Negotiators, and the Spokane Regional Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) responded to the scene and secured the area. The Spokane Police SWAT team was able to detain the male, and secure the child without injury to either party. The investigation is ongoing, and there is no outstanding threat to the community.
Spokane Police take these types of incidents very seriously, and will work to keep all involved parties and the surrounding community safe. The Spokane Police would like to thank the local residents for their patience while many of them were advised to stay inside their homes, and the roadway to the apartment complex was shut down for the incident.
