Adult male arrested after threatening others with machete in North Spokane

On 03-04-18 a little after 5PM, SPD received multiple calls regarding a male brandishing a machete in the area of Division St, and Rockwell Ave. The male was reportedly swinging the machete and stating he was “going to war” with others. One of the victims the male threatened was later identified as a 12 year-old female.

Officers quickly arrived on scene, and located the male who was still swinging the weapon. The male initially ran from officers, but was quickly contained in a parking lot East of Division on Lacrosse Ave. The suspect continued to hold the machete, and made numerous statements that he desired officers to shoot him.

After negotiating with the male for about twenty minutes, officers were able to convince him to drop the machete, and he was taken into custody without incident.

24 year-old Sean Herman faces charges for obstructing, unlawful handling of a weapon apparently capable of producing bodily harm (brandishing), resisting arrest, along with an unrelated felony Department of Corrections warrant. Additional charges are possible.

This was a very dangerous situation due to the location; many businesses were open in the area, and pedestrian traffic was close to the scene. A large number of officers responded to ensure the suspect could not harm members of the public, and maximize the ability to safely take the suspect into custody.

Lacrosse Ave has been re-opened, and traffic conditions are back to normal in the area.
