The Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) Team is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) which took place during a court ordered eviction. The suspect who sustained gunshot wound(s) was transported to a local hospital and is undergoing surgery. No officers, deputies or other citizens were injured during this incident.
This morning just after 10:15 a.m., a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was serving court ordered eviction paperwork at an apartment located in the 5300 block of North Regal St. The Deputy, who had received information of prior threats by the occupant, requested assistance of Spokane Police Officers. Medical personnel were also requested to stage in the area a short time later.
Initial information is the Deputy/Officers gained access to the apartment with the assistance of the manager. Upon entering the apartment, the suspect was observed sitting in the area of a couch. The suspect began reaching under a blanket covering what the Deputy/Officer(s) believed to be a weapon. Several commands were given, but those commands were ignored.
At approximately 10:40 a.m., an officer advised Dispatch shots had been fired and requested medics to respond to the apartment. Life-saving measures were initiated by law enforcement until relieved by arriving medics. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and he was last known to be in surgery.
Due to an Officer and Deputy being involved, the Officer Involved Protocol was enacted. SIRR Team investigators arrived at the scene along with personnel from the Spokane County Forensic Unit to conduct an investigation. SIRR Team members will remain on scene as they obtain search warrants, process evidence and interview any potential witnesses.
Following standard protocol, the Deputy and Officer who fired their service weapon have been placed on administrative leave.
Investigators ask anyone who has not already been contacted by law enforcement, and may have information regarding this incident, to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Washington State Patrol, the Spokane Valley Police Department, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and the Spokane Police Department.
