June 1, 2018, units from Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Fire Department were able to remove a vehicle found in the Spokane River just South of the Mission St Bridge. The vehicle was found crashed in the river on April 21, 2018. The river, at that time, was very high and the currents too swift to attempt recovery operations. The river conditions have been continuously monitored and it was found, today, that conditions had improved enough to safely recover the vehicle.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office’s Emergency Operations Team and the Spokane Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team and Drone Team assisted the Spokane Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit in the recovery effort. A heavy tow truck was brought in to assist in removing the vehicle from the river. After four hours, the vehicle was successfully recovered.

An unidentified deceased person was found in the vehicle. The body will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office as part of the investigation. Identification of the deceased person will made by the Medical Examiner’s Office at a later date.

Spokane Police would like to thank the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Team and the Spokane Fire Departments Water Rescue Team and Drone Team for their assistance in this recovery.

SPD encourages anyone who may have witnessed the crash on April 21 to please call crime check at 456-2233.
