Tonight, November 19, at approximately 8pm, a Spokane Police Officer was patrolling the area of W Wellesley Ave and N Belt St when he was flagged down by a driver at the location.  The driver had struck an elderly male pedestrian at the intersection.

When the officer checked on the male, he had stopped breathing and had no pulse.  The officer immediately began life saving measures and requested emergency medical response.  A passerby stopped to help the officer perform CPR on the pedestrian.  CPR was administered by the officer and citizen until emergency medical personnel arrived and took over.  The male was transported to a local hospital where, despite the immediate life saving measures taken by the officer, passerby and emergency medical personnel, he died of his injuries.

The intersection was closed for about an hour during the investigation.  The driver stayed on scene and cooperated fully with the investigation.  No charges have been filed against the driver, at this time

SPD would like to thank the citizen who stopped to help our officer perform CPR.  People like her, who are willing to help in a time of crisis, truly show the best characteristics of the human race.

If you witnessed this collision and have not spoken with investigators, please call Crime Check at 456-2233.
