Stabbing in Spokane’s Garland District results in life-threatening injuries

On 02-05-2021 at around 1PM, SPD received a call about a fight in the 1000 block of W Garland. Multiple callers reported two males fighting, with a female attempting to intervene.

SPD arrived on scene within minutes and quickly realized that an adult male victim had been stabbed multiple times and was bleeding profusely. SPD officers rendered immediate medical attention, including applying a tourniquet, which was successful in limiting the victim’s blood loss.

The adult male victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

SPD began a comprehensive investigation which included speaking with multiple witnesses and gathering physical evidence. Through the course of that investigation it was determined probable cause existed to arrest 47-year-old Otis C Shaw for assault 1st degree. Information obtained led police to believe Mr. Shaw may have been located in an apartment at the 800 block of W Cora Ave. Due to the violent nature of the incident, coupled with pertinent known history of the suspect, SPD SWAT was utilized to serve a warrant at the apartment. Mr. Shaw was not located, and at the writing of this release remains outstanding.

It does not appear that Mr. Shaw and the victim knew each other, however there is information that an argument preceded the assault. The circumstances leading up to the incident continue to be investigated.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not spoken with police are encouraged to call crime check at 456-2233 reference case # 2021-20019882. Those with information about Mr. Shaw’s whereabouts are also asked to call 911 or crime check. Information can be given anonymously. SPD encourages Mr. Shaw to contact SPD and arrange a peaceful surrender to law enforcement.
