On 12-27-21, just after 6PM, SPD officers responded to the 5000 block of N Jefferson St for a stabbing. The caller reported that they had been stabbed by their long-time girlfriend.
The victim was able to escape the residence and meet with officers. Officers noted the victim was suffering from an apparent stab wound to the torso that did not appear life-threatening. The victim stated their girlfriend remained in the house with the sword, and that two small children were also inside the residence with her. Officers were made aware there were firearms in the house, and that the suspect was intoxicated and acting erratically.
Officers quickly set up containment on the residence, positioning themselves in a manner they could quickly react if it became apparent the children’s lives were in danger, yet maintaining enough distance to allow for negotiation efforts. Multiple attempts were made to establish communication with the suspect, however she refused to talk and appeared extremely agitated.
After being on scene for approximately forty minutes, officers close to the residence heard the suspect shout a statement that made officers fearful the children were in imminent danger. Officers immediately began making entry into the house, which included forcing open a door and getting around items the suspect used to fortify the position. As officers were attempting to enter the residence, the suspect swung the sword at an officer while yelling that she would kill them. The suspect then retreated further into the structure.
The officer was able to avoid being struck with the sword, and a team of officers rapidly pursued the suspect into the house to protect the children from harm. The suspect still refused to relinquish the sword, however officers were able to successfully utilize a Taser and take the women into custody without further incident.
The suspect was booked into Spokane County Jail for assault 1st degree (stabbing her boyfriend) and assault 2nd degree (swinging the sword at the officer).
The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The children were not injured during the incident.
Officers conducted a search warrant on the residence and retrieved a “katana” style sword which has a blade approximately 3-4’ in length.
