SPD arrests suspect in Home Depot fire that caused millions of dollars in damages
On Sunday 05/29/2022, SPD detectives arrested Kennie A. Calvert, 59, and charged her with 1st Degree Arson for a fire at the Home Depot on Newport Highway on 05/19/2022. SFD Fire Investigators and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) determined the cause of the fire as arson and SPD Major Crimes detectives began an investigation for a suspect.
Probable Cause was developed for Calvert whom detectives determined was in the Newport Highway Home Depot on 5/19 and started the fire as a distraction when she and an accomplice shoplifted items from the store. Calvert was located over the weekend when SPD responded to a shoplifting call at another Home Depot in Spokane. Calvert was cited for that theft and arrested by detectives for the fire set during the other Home Depot theft.
Calvert was booked into the Spokane County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bond. Calvert has 21 prior felony convictions. Home Depot officials estimate the cost of the destruction from the fire is 6 to 7 million dollars.
Detectives also arrested Sierra D. Fry, 26, today - 06/01/2022, who accompanied Calvert in the store on the day of the fire. Fry is charged with Retail Theft with Special Circumstances for involvement in two separate thefts besides the Home Depot theft that resulted in the fire.
