One person killed, suspect arrested, in late night shooting

On 08-21-22 just before 11PM, SPD responded to the 1300 block of W Shannon Ave regarding a shooting. SPD officers arrived about two minutes after being dispatched and located both an adult male victim and the suspect.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where, despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.

68-year-old Duarte Cordero was detained by officers immediately after the incident, and subsequent investigative information identified him as the perpetrator. Cordero was booked into Spokane County Jail for murder 2nd degree.

Cordero is a convicted felon with a criminal history that includes a 1990 conviction for murder in the 1st degree. His criminal history precludes him from legally possessing firearms.

The investigation is on-going, however initial information indicates this was not a random incident. The victim’s identity will be released by the medical examiner’s office at a later date.
