Couple arrested for shoplifting more than $20,000 of merchandise

SPD’s Stolen Property Enforcement and Recovery Unit (SPEAR) arrested two shoplifters engaged in organized retail theft this week as part of the unit’s ongoing work to put a stop to shoplifting activity throughout Spokane. SPEAR obtained several reports about the same male and female shoplifting from several locations in Spokane and the Spokane Valley area. The pair utilized a similar method multiple times; they quickly enter a store, fill shopping baskets with merchandise grabbed from the shelves, and run out of the store within seconds. Through diligent investigations, the unit was able to identify the two suspects as Brandon M. Stoddard (35) and Monica M. Boggess (22).

Patrol officers and detectives with SPEAR have built relationships with local businesses to assist them with stopping shoplifters. On January 30, 2023 SPD officers were contacted by a local business and advised Boggess was near the 4700 block of N. Division St. When officers arrived they located Boggess getting out of a stolen car. She ran from police, but was caught and taken into custody without incident. Officers learned Stoddard was in a store nearby. Officers attempted to arrest Stoddard, who, like Boggess, fled on foot. Officers were also able to catch him and take him into custody.

The investigation showed that in the past 3 months the couple has stolen more than $23,000 in merchandise from 2 different stores.

Boggess was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for Theft 1^st and 2^nd degree and organized retail theft. Boggess also sold the stolen items online, therefore she was charged with trafficking in stolen property. Stoddard was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for Theft 1^st and 2^nd degree, organized retail theft and criminal trespass. Stoddard has 9 prior felony convictions to include; attempted robbery, malicious mischief, attempt to elude (two separate counts), malicious mischief in the 1^st degree, possession of stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, harassment and vehicular assault.

SPD is working with retailers to identify and arrest suspects committing retail theft. If you witness shoplifting or people fleeing from a business, be a good witness by providing vehicle or suspect information to police or security. For your safety please don’t step in or attempt to stop a shoplifter.
