Spokane Police Officers were involved in an officer involved shooting Sunday evening in the 1800 block of West Dean Avenue. The following information is preliminary; more information will be released at a later time by the Spokane Independent Investigation Response (SIIR) team.
On 3-31-24 at 9:57pm, officers with the Spokane Police Department responded to the area of 1800 West Dean to assist the Spokane Fire Department with a house fire. 911 received a call from a neighbor advising of a structure fire and that someone could be heard screaming. Upon arriving, police and fire removed multiple subjects from the home. Shortly after making contact with the occupants, it was learned that the incident was a possible arson and that a person of interest in the event was unaccounted for.
Officers began interviewing the subjects removed from the residence to ascertain their involvement in the arson investigation. One subject was not cooperative and started walking away. As officers attempted to detain the male, he discharged a firearm concealed on his person. Officers reacted to the immediate lethal threat and returned fire. Officers began life saving measures after the suspect was disarmed. On-scene medical personnel also assisted in attempting life saving measures, but the suspect male succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Thankfully no officers, fire fighters or civilians were injured during the event.
As standard protocol, the two involved officers will be placed on administrative leave. Officers were equipped with body cameras at the time of the incident.
The Spokane Independent Investigative Response (SIIR) team will conduct the investigation. The SIIR team is comprised of multiple agencies in Eastern Washington including the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol and the Spokane Police Department.
As an involved agency, Spokane Police Department personnel will not be involved in this investigation in compliance with WAC 139-12.
