On January 23, 2026 at just before 6:30 p.m., 911 received a call from a female crying and asking for help. The call originated from 3080 North Hemlock. Yelling could be heard in the background and comments were being made about a gun. A male was also heard yelling at people to get out of the home, he was ready for anyone and there would be gun fire. Additional information was also provided that the male, later identified as Clayton Green, made comments he was waiting for officers with a gun.

Two females left the home and were contacted by officers. After completing interviews with the victim and witnesses, officers developed probable cause for Felony Harassment- Domestic Violence. Due to the significant safety issues and Green’s comment about being armed and waiting for law enforcement, multiple specialty units responded to the location. SPD SWAT, K9, Hostage Negotiators (HNT) and the Air Support Unit (ASU) responded to assist.

HNT made multiple contacts with Green by phone with some of the calls almost an hour in length. Repeated efforts were made to have Green peacefully surrender, but he refused. Green made comments about shooting himself and or law enforcement if they entered the home and talked about having different weapons during the phone calls. Green would come out to the front porch and at times kneel down but failed to surrender and would go back inside. Continual efforts were made to have Green surrender. At 9:07 p.m., Green walked out on to the front porch, armed with a handgun. He then placed the gun to his head while yelling. Again, he failed to comply with officer’s commands and went back inside.

Officers applied for and were granted a search warrant. Green still refused to comply with requests to surrender and at just after 10:30 p.m., he threw a lit object out the front door in the direction of SWAT officers. The device (a large firework) exploded in the front yard.

Due to his actions, chemical irritants were inserted into the residence all while Green was on the phone with negotiators. At 11:23 p.m., Green finally exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident. Clayton J. Green (43) was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Felony Harassment- DV, 1st Degree Arson and 2nd Degree Assault. The incredible restraint illustrated by the officers on scene is a testament to their training and character.
