On March 28, 2026 around 2:45 p.m., Spokane police officers working the protests were flagged down by an individual. This person informed police officers that a female, later identified as Lilian Cantu (18), had stolen his flag from him as he was holding it. This male was able to point the female out to officers.

As officers attempted to detain Cantu, a male, later identified as Christopher Hutto (32), assaulted one of the officers.

Once Cantu and Hutto were taken into custody, SPD officers left the area to allow protesters and counter protesters to continue peacefully assembling and expressing their first amendment rights.

Cantu was arrested for Theft 1st degree and Hutto was arrested for Assault 3rd degree. Both were booked into the Spokane County Jail.

During a search incident to arrest, officers located several items in their possession, to include large rocks, pepper spray, disposable face masks, and spray paint.
