Friday, Jan. 15, 12:43 PM, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), along with a Fire District 8 engine company, were dispatched to the 1800 block of East 18th Avenue on the South Hill for a report of a fire in an attached garage underneath a house.
Firefighters arrived in less than six minutes to find smoke coming from the garage. The fire melted gasoline cans in the garage, spilling the gasoline onto the garage floor and igniting. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it could gain entry into the home. Damage was contained to the garage and two motorcycles.
The owners were not at home at the time but arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the fire. A generator was being used in the garage to heat and light the house due to this week's windstorm and subsequent power outage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SFD Special Investigations Unit.
