The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched yesterday at 9:58 PM to the area of 3400 West 2nd Avenue for a reported well-involved structure fire. While companies were responding, additional information from the 911 caller indicated the structure was a garage behind a residence and contained large propane tanks.

The first company arrived within five minutes and confirmed the structure was consumed in fire, and declared a defensive strategy. The defensive strategy is often chosen when incident commanders intend to isolate or stabilize an incident to ensure it does not worsen. Defensive tactics may mean sacrificing the building on fire to save others that are not involved. In this case, a defensive operation was initiated because fire conditions prevented an interior attack and civilian lives were not at risk. Moreover, while the building was beyond saving, SFD positioned hose streams to save nearby threatened homes and confined the fire to the structure of origin.

There were no injures to either civilians or firefighters as a result of this incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the SFD's Investigation Unit.
