At approximately 9:50 on Thursday April 14, 2022, Engine 6 from the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to 1800-block W 7th Ave to investigate an undetermined smoke odor. Engine 6 arrived on the scene to find a large 2- story house converted to 7 apartment units. Light smoke was visible on the exterior, along with audible smoke alarms.  Based on the exterior observation and audible alarms, Engine 6 requested a complete alarm assignment to summon four additional Engine Companies, 2 Ladder Trucks, and 2 Command Staff Officers.

Upon entering the structure, Engine 6 encountered zero visibility smoke conditions on the second floor and ensured the complete evacuation of occupants. Subsequent arriving SFD units extinguished the fire, ventilated the structure from smoke, and thoroughly searched all areas of the structure for possible occupants or victims.

The fire was contained to a second-floor unit within 10 minutes of arrival. It appeared the fire had been burning for a significant amount of time, causing severe smoke damage to the upper floors.

There were no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters, and the American Red Cross was providing lodging for three adults.
