May 7, at 12:02 AM, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to a structure fire reported by a security guard patrolling a row of vacant residences. The security officer reported the fire on the backside of a home located in the 1900 Block of East Lyons.
The first company arrived within 4-minutes and found heavy fire involvement from the rear of the home. Significant waste and debris in the backyard initially inhibited firefighting operations. The structure was vacant; however, there were still substantial materials and property in the occupancy from previous tenants. The amount of material present created hoarder-like conditions for firefighting crews. In addition, the building was secured with plywood and padlocks, which slowed firefighting operations initially.
Aggressive firefighting efforts accomplished a complete search of the structure in short order, and the fire was declared out at 1225.
There were neither civilian nor firefighter casualties or injuries resulting from this event. A fire watch company remained on the scene throughout the night to ensure the fire remained extinguished and allowed investigators to process the scene in daylight this morning. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by the SFD's Investigation Unit.
