At approximately 8:26 pm, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 2200 East block of Glass Avenue on a report of a detached, two-car garage fire. Firefighters arrived 5 minutes after dispatch and reported that the detached garage was well-involved in fire, and no immediate exposures were threatened. The garage fire was quickly confined and extinguished, preventing the spread to the adjoining structures. Companies quickly searched the garage to ensure no victims were inside. The fire was contained, and loss stopped within 5 minutes of the first company arriving on the scene. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. ?The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the SFD's Special Investigation Unit.

Educational Message: Fireplaces, or wood-burning stoves, should only burn dry, seasoned wood. Newspaper and kindling can be used to start a fire. Avoid using garbage or flammable liquids, as these can produce hazardous vapors and cause build-up in chimneys, which could result in an uncontrolled fire. Chimneys and vents should be cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional once a year. Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace, and keep it in place. Be sure to keep the doors of wood-burning stoves closed, as well. These screens and doors can remain hot for hours after a fire goes out, so be careful not to touch them. Keep children and pets 3 feet away from the fireplace or wood-burning stove. If the fireplace is electric, keep "on" switches and remotes out of the reach of children.
