Applications are being accepted for the independent citizen Police Ombudsman Commission.

Materials are available at spokanecity.org. Deadline to apply is June 6. The first commission is expected to be seated and ready for work in mid-July.

Spokane Mayor David Condon and members of the City Council will review the applications. Condon has two appointments to the five-member commission and the City Council will have three appointments, one from each district. Terms for initial appointments are likely to be staggered to avoid the entire commission turning over at one time.

Review of the applications is expected to take approximately 30 days. Interviews will be conducted in early July. Applicants must undergo a background check.

City Attorney Nancy Isserlis hosted two public meetings to gather citizen input on the selection process. Input from those meetings was used to develop the process. Isserlis has also recommended some level of administrative support be provided to the commission and that it have access to independent legal counsel on a contractual basis as necessary.
