The City Council will consider a resolution at its 6 p.m. Meeting on Monday, September 26 in support of designating October 1st as Italian American Heritage Day in the City of Spokane.

The idea for designating the day came out of discussions between Councilmember Waldref and leaders in the Italian American community. “Last month, I heard concerns from members of our Italian American community that their culture, history and contributions to Spokane deserved to be recognized. I reached out and asked for their input on ways to celebrate their culture and experiences here in Spokane.”

After conversations, local leaders identified Oct. 1st as a significant date for members of Spokane’s Italian American Community. On October 1, 1966 the American Italian Club of Spokane, Order of the Sons of Italy Lodge #2172 was established. This year marks their 50th anniversary. Also, this coming Oct. 1, 2016 will be the date that the new Sister City agreement between Spokane and Cagli, Italy will be signed.

Italian Americans have contributed greatly to business, arts and culture, agriculture, law, and civics in the City of Spokane. “We are excited to be able to use this opportunity to tell our story and highlight important cultural activities”, stated American Italian Club President Ron Anselmo.
