Ben Burr Trail to move forward

After months of presentations and receiving public input, the Design phase of the Ben Burr Trail is ready to move forward. The same presentation engineers have been showing to neighborhood groups was presented to Council to decide whether the project would be stopped or move onto design.

Public response for the project was incredible. After reviewing all letters, emails and blog posts and removing duplication, the response was at a 2 to 1 ratio for and against.

Council did not just look at this project lightly and move it forward. They had some criticisms of the process and some guidelines they wanted a firm commitment on to move this project forward. The Parks Department as well supported the development of the Trail but wanted the same commitment, that the neighborhood be involved. What does this mean?

  • Design Engineers will walk the full length of the trail with neighborhood and Council representatives
  • Engineers will take note of specific points that the neighborhood and Council has concern over
  • Engineers will mitigate these concerns that are allowable within the scope of the project
  • A closer look at accommodating the spring that exists currently along the trail which has already been brought forth as a concern by the neighborhood

The funding for the Ben Burr project comes from two federal sources:

  • Design funds: Surface Transportation Program (STP)
  • Right of way funds: STP and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ)
  • Construction funds: STP
