City of Spokane Parks and Recreation today unveiled a grand opening date for the Riverfront Park ice ribbon, the first completed redevelopment bond project. Riverfront also shared a new logo that represents the next chapter in the revitalized park.
Ice Ribbon Grand Opening
Riverfront invites the community to celebrate the grand opening of the new ice ribbon:
Friday, December 8
5 P.M. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
5 – 10 P.M. Fire pits, an ice lounge, live DJ, photo booth, food trucks, face painting, arts and crafts hosted by Tomato Street, and more
Spokane’s ice ribbon will be the first on the west coast and offers a new vibrant, urban skating experience for families, children and recreational skaters of all ages and abilities.
Measuring 16’ wide and 700’ long, the ice ribbon invites skaters to explore the dips and climbs of a wandering ice trail, discover scenic urban views or cozy up with hot cocoa at one of three fire pits. As the day turns to night, the glow from overhead bistro lights sets the mood for an unbeatably cool adventure.
In the summer, you’ll see roller skating, art walks, and other programmed activities along the ribbon.
Nearly every day, The Ice will be programmed with free ice skating lessons, cheap skate nights, live music, themed dress up events (even for the dogs!), happy hours, and even Yoga on Ice! We have wonderful sponsors on board to help provide free and low-cost programs. Take a look at the Winter Activity Guide for a peek at programming.
Programming is made possible through generous partnerships with several businesses. Thank you to River Park Square, Tomato Street, Athleta and Nordstrom, Downtown Spokane Partnership, First Night, Washington Trust Bank, Spokane Humane Society, and Spokane Art School.
New Logo and Branding
A new Riverfront Park requires a new brand to help share the story of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.
We are delighted to present a new logo to the Spokane community. It is inspired by iconic park architecture, the cable netting of the U.S. Pavilion, crisscrossing of urban streets and future park pathways.
Spokane Starts Here – it’s a new tagline that represents the center of trading in the past and the center of our City today, at the roaring heart of Spokane. For residents, businesses, and visitors – in so many ways – Spokane starts at Riverfront Park.
It’s a place of rich and meaningful history, first as the aboriginal land of the Spokane Tribe and later the railroad industry. More recently, our community came together to create a park that was home to the 1974 World’s Fair. And now, a new dream is underway with the voter-approved redevelopment bond to restore our 100-acre park.
Riverfront Park brings adventures, activities and attractions to the roaring heart of our city. It’s home to the largest urban waterfall in the United States.
It’s where our community celebrates major holidays, jogs in the morning, walks to downtown destinations like dining and entertainment, or spends a moment of solitude. It’s where we gather as a community for rallies and parades, for potlucks and picnics.
Riverfront Park helps grow our economy by attracting businesses to our region, serving as a catalyst to attract tourism, convention center visitors, and shoppers. For working professionals looking to stay or relocate in Spokane, the park enhances their quality of life.
Riverfront offers something for everyone, in every season, and invites you to play, learn, grow, explore, celebrate and dream big.
Thank you
Thank you to the Spokane community who has supported the redevelopment, provided excellent feedback about its direction, and continues to patiently navigate pathways around construction. Together, we have much to celebrate as the first feature of our new park opens.
