Officer Released from Hospital;WSP Looking for Reckless Drivers

A Spokane Police Motor Unit Officer has been released from the hospital following a collision at the intersection of Crestline and Rowan this afternoon. The crash occurred after Officer Shaidon Storch saw two vehicles northbound on Crestline at a high rate of speed that appeared to be racing. Initial information indicates Ofc. Storch activated his lights and siren to stop the reckless drivers and was struck by a vehicle crossing Crestline westbound at Rowan.

This afternoon, May 19, 2016, just before 3:00pm, Ofc. Storch was on his department motorcycle watching for speeders on Crestline just north of Wellesley. Witnesses indicate that two vehicles, a black car and a blue car (see pictures on FaceBook and Twitter), appeared to be racing northbound on Crestline. One witness saw Ofc. Storch leave a parking lot, activate his emergency lights, and believed he was trying to stop the two vehicles.

 

As Ofc. Storch approached the intersection of Crestline and Rowan, a vehicle crossed westbound on Rowan. Ofc. Storch collided with the front of that vehicle just in front of the driver’s door and was thrown from his motorcycle. Initial reports indicated his injuries were serious, but once at the hospital, Ofc. Storch became more alert and was able to remember what had occurred. Fortunately he had no broken bones or other serious injuries and was released from the hospital earlier this evening.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated for minor injuries on the scene. 

Ofc. Storch is in his sixth year with the Motor Unit and was hired with the Spokane Police Department in 2006. Prior to that, he volunteered with SPD as both a Cooperative Education Student and a Reserve Officer.

The investigation into this collision is being led by the Washington State Patrol. At this time, no citations have been issued and the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are looking for the two vehicles in the pictures on our social media that Ofc. Storch was originally attempting to stop.
