SIRR Team Investigating Officer Involved Shooting

Yesterday, May 7, 2017, just after 6:00pm, a Spokane Police officer attempted to stop a reckless driver in the area of Bridgeport and Perry in northeast Spokane. The subject abandoned the car and fled on foot near Fairview and Perry. Officers responding to the area were able to locate the subject at Dalton and Perry and at least one officer reported the subject was trying to “go after” a citizen. A citizen also called 911 reporting a male was threatening people with a knife at the location. Officers on scene asked for medics to respond and reported the male was stabbing himself. Officers attempted to establish verbal communication with the subject and one of the officers was able to deploy his Taser, but it was ineffective. Despite these efforts, the situation escalated and three officers fired their weapons, striking the subject.

Medical aid was rendered by officers immediately and the subject was transported to an area hospital where he is still in surgery, but stable at this time.

Officers on scene were equipped with body worn cameras. Any footage captured by the body cameras, as well as any captured by cameras in the area, will be reviewed by investigators.

The Officer Involved Protocol was enacted. The SIRR Team is on-scene investigating the incident. The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Spokane Police Department, the Washington State Patrol and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

• The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications on this incident will be sent via the SIRR Team.
• The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the officers involved in this incident.
• Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
