The Spokane Police Department Traffic Unit wants to remind you that school starts again for Spokane Public Schools on Thursday, Aug. 29. The traffic unit as well as SPD patrol will be coordinating efforts to enforce the speed limits in school zones, to help keep our children safe as they begin the new school year. Below is some helpful information, including the locations for the photo enforced school zone cameras.

  • All school zones are 20 mph, and the fines for violations double in those zones.
  • We have five photo enforced school zone cameras, they are at the following locations.
    • North Ash St. @ Ridgeview Elementary School
    • North Maple St. @ Ridgeview Elementary School
    • North Nevada St. @ Longfellow Elementary School
    • West Northwest Blvd. @ Finch Elementary School
    • North Monroe St. @ Willard Elementary School
  • All the photo enforced cameras will be writing infractions starting Thursday, Aug. 29

*** Remember, research has shown that the survival rate of a child being hit at 20 mph vs 30 mph is greatly increased. At 20 mph there is a 10% chance of fatality while at 30 mph it increases to 50%. While the goal is no collisions, reducing your speed will increase your chance of avoiding a collision in the first place, as well as decrease the severity of injury to anyone, including a child if the unthinkable happens.***
