SPD tackling increase in violent crime with multiple arrests
An extensive investigation effort involving numerous SPD specialty units as well as patrol has resulted in the arrests of many of those involved in a violent crime uptick in our community. Over the weekend, SPD arrested or added additional charges to those already arrested, for a series of crimes to include drive-by shootings, murder, and assault.
The latest round of arrests and charges involving 3 juvenile and 2 adult males, are the result of numerous investigations into violent crime. SPD detectives developed probable cause to add 10 additional charges each to one juvenile and one adult including conspiracy to commit 1st degree murder, attempted 1st degree murder, 7 counts of 1st degree assault, and 1 count of drive-by shooting. Charges for others arrested or charged this weekend include 1st degree assault with a firearm and 1st degree assault.
Additionally, SPD with the help of U.S. Marshalls arrested one suspect in the May 10, 2021 shooting spree where 87 rounds were fired around the Serrano Apartments in North Spokane. SPD is in the process of extraditing the suspect who was arrested out of state last week.
Additional investigations are open and ongoing with SPD working diligently to identify and arrest others involved in the violent crime surge our community has experienced recently.
So far this year there have been 12 drive-by shootings and 44 other shootings through May 31, 2021. Other shootings may include accidental discharge or unlawful discharge with no intent to assault, or other intentional assaults that don’t meet the definition of a drive-by shooting.
